Advocate (Barrister Equivalent) of the High Court of South Africa and Arbitrator

Professor Dire Tladi is a prize-winning South African academic, diplomat, advocate and professor of international law, as well as a current member of the UN International Law Commission and a South African arbitration lawyer.

His main specializations are in public international law, human rights law, environmental law and international criminal law. He has served as the Principal State Law Adviser for International Law for the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation and South Africa Mission to the United Nations. He was previously an Extraordinary Professor at the University of Stellenbosh, in its Department of Public Law, and he also worked at the South African Department of International Relations and Cooperation for eight years.

Professor Tladi is currently a member of the legal team for the Lake Malawi Dispute between Malawi and Tanzania and advises Pew Charitable Trusts on matters relating to Oceans and the Law of the Sea. He has served as legal expert on the South African Continental Shelf Project Team, was legal adviser for the South African delegation during the negotiations for the Grand Inga Hydro-Electric Power Project, served on the Group of Experts on Public International Law of the OECD in respect of Base Erosion and Profit Shifting and has advised South Africa with respect to the UN Convention on the Law of the Sea and numerous other legal matters.

A frequent speaker on subjects involving international law, Professor Tladi has published dozens of articles on this matter, and he is considered to be one of the leading specialists on public international law of his generation.

In addition to advising on matters with an international element, Professor Tladi may be contacted about serving as an arbitrator for many classes of international disputes.
